ABOUT THE PROJECT

Keeping Rhade words within reach

Rhade—also written Rade, Radeh, or Êđê—has long carried family knowledge, place names, stories, and everyday conversation across Vietnam’s Central Highlands and Rhade communities beyond the region.

The Rhade-English Dictionary brings a substantial printed record into a searchable digital form. It honors the care of earlier lexicographic work while making words easier to browse, compare, and revisit on the devices people use today.

A · Ê · Ư · Č

From a careful record to a living resource

The original dictionary documented headwords, meanings, compounds, grammatical categories, sample usage, and historical relationships between words. This digital edition keeps that depth visible instead of reducing the language to a simple translation list.

ABOUT THE LANGUAGE

A language shaped by community and place

Rhade—called Êđê by its speakers and also recorded as Rade, Raday, or Rdê—is an Austronesian language of Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

Êđê Rhade Rade Rdê

ROOTED IN THE HIGHLANDS

Carried across a living region

Historical scholarship places Rhade-speaking communities across Đắk Lắk and parts of Khánh Hòa, with a strong center around Buôn Ma Thuột. Recorded community varieties include Mdhur, Adham, Blo, Kodrao, Bih, Krung, and Rdê Kpă.

A LANGUAGE OF CONNECTION

Shared beyond the home

Rhade has also served as a language of wider communication in parts of the Central Highlands, helping people from different communities speak with one another as well as within families and villages.

A DISTINCTIVE WRITING SYSTEM

Every mark has a purpose

Its established orthography uses a carefully ordered alphabet and distinctive symbols for consonants, vowels, vowel length, and glottal articulation. The dictionary keeps those forms visible because spelling is part of meaning.

READING THE DICTIONARY

A word is only the beginning

Each entry is designed to help readers see how a form is written, what it means, how it behaves, and where it connects to the rest of the language.

01

Rhade comes first

Main entries follow Rhade headwords and the language’s own alphabetical order. Diacritics and distinctive letter forms matter, so searching is not limited to English spelling habits.

02

Meaning has structure

Definitions may be joined by parts of speech, numerical classifiers, related forms, compounds, cross-references, and example sentences that show a word in context.

03

History stays visible

Where the source work connects a headword to Proto-Austronesian or Proto-Chamic reconstructions, those etymological notes preserve a longer view of the word’s development.

ORTHOGRAPHY

Small marks carry real differences

Rhade spelling represents contrasts in consonants, vowel quality, vowel length, and glottal articulation. The printed sources sometimes vary in how rare forms are represented; this edition follows consistent forms where the evidence permits while retaining distinctions that affect meaning.

GRAMMAR

Entries show how words behave

Nouns, verbs, adjectives, demonstratives, classifiers, particles, and other categories are identified when the source provides them. Intensive, plural, reduplicated, and bi-marked verb forms are kept with the entries they help explain.
